Let’s talk Morning Rituals…
Each morning it’s the beginning of a new day and we have the opportunity to start fresh + set ourselves up for greatness. For many of us, early in the day is the best opportunity we have for truly uninterrupted self-care. I truly believe that making your mornings a time dedicated to putting yourself first is powerful!
I have found that understanding what powers me up in the AM is essential to keeping myself grounded, productive and peaceful amongst the chaos that so often comes with modern life. Once you discover what these things are for you too, the key is to make them a ritual, a routine, a habit, basically a non-negotiable automatic set of actions that fully support your body, mind and soul.
Most of the time that may mean getting up earlier. And yes… I know! This may immediately and completely not appeal to you… it definitely didn’t to me, at first. I was always a night owl and totally dug my late nights + occasionally still do. But I had to admit that when I did get up early I felt way more productive and energized. Now I can honestly say that my life has transformed in some incredible ways by making the shift to early bird. It’s true what they say… the early bird gets the worm! Lol… so go on and get that juiciness!!!
Getting up even 1 hour earlier and taking that time to enjoy a relaxed morning instead of… hitting the snooze button multiple times only to finally drag yourself out of bed and quite possibly having to jerk yourself awake because otherwise you’ll be late for your life… can make a huge difference in how you feel about your mornings and your overall flow in life. For me, more peace and a sense of ease comes from the practice of having morning rituals in place that make me feel good… Mondays included.
Here are my top 10 things that can totally and completely help you fall in love with your mornings…
#1 Silence. The absolute best thing I have made part of my daily morning routine is 10-30 minutes of meditation… just sitting peacefully in a comfortable position, eyes closed and allowing each part of my body to relax. I slow down my mind and bring my attention to breathing in and out. No need to forcefully clear your mind here just become aware of your thoughts and focus on your breathing. I have noticed a huge shift in my moods and an increased sense of happiness, clarity + calm with this practice. And yes it’s definitely a practice, one that gets easier and more rewarding the more I do it. However you want to practice silence, whether it be prayer or just sitting in stillness… don’t miss out. I promise it’s worth it!
#2 Affirmations/Mantras. Words are powerful and we can use them to positively power ourselves up. Meaningful phrases that are repeated silently or aloud with genuine feeling behind them begin to grow and take root in our subconscious minds. I have overcome some difficult times with the power of affirmations alone… it’s truly incredible how words can shift our reality. Sometimes I mix a particular phrase that feels good into my morning meditation or right afterwards is a nice time to recite some words. Writing them out or even reading your affirmations + mantras is is another effective technique, especially as you are feeling out which ones you are drawn to. They can be about patience, forgiveness, health, wealth… you name it! As long as they produce a positive shift in you, like making you feel more open, at ease + abundant. That’s the whole point, my friend! ♥
#3 Gratitude. Being grateful is another practice with powerful results. Many of us have heard this before, but doing this regularly is a whole new ballgame. When I think about all the good I already have in my life I have come to realize that those feelings and experiences only grow + multiply. Versus when I get caught in being critical or too judgemental of myself and other then that too feeds the opposite of what I truly want. It can take just a few minutes for pretty potent effects. You can write them down or just beam it out, silently or aloud. Mix it up, whatever you want… just do it on the regular.
#4 Journaling. I have really come to love writing! If writing is something you enjoy or maybe you aren’t sure about, try pouring out your thoughts, feelings and to-dos onto a sheet or two of paper or in your journal. Doing a form of “brain download” can help you get out of your head and back into the present moment. We often have so much going on in our heads; it’s nice to get a fresh perspective after letting it out. Not to mention make a little more space in there! When I do this I notice it really helps me to come up with fresh ideas, new outlooks + perspectives and a greater sense of purpose. Essentially it boosts our inner creativity + allows our thought processes to flow a bit better, which is a beautiful thing. Writing is wonderful!
#5 Hydrate. In the morning before you drink anything else (especially c-o-f-f-e-e) you need to HYDRATE with a big glass of water… ideally Spring water that’s not too cold (room temp or hot are good too). Follow this with another big glass of water with some fresh lemon juice or apple cider vinegar (start with 1 tsp of either). This is an awesome alkalizing and gently detoxifying morning elixir that your liver will love you for, and you can drink this daily. During the night our bodies work hard to detoxify and remove waste from our cells and it’s essential to flush it out with hydration so our body can eliminate normally. Dehydration can keep toxins stuck in your body (yuck)… proper hydration really helps to flush it out. Water in the AM also helps to wake up your digestive system and get your juices flowing so you can more fully utilize and properly process your 1st meal. These are just a few solid reasons to make plenty of water part of your morning ritual. So pretty pretty please make your top morning beverage 1-2 glasses of water before you even consider anything else.
#6 Breakfast. This is when we are essentially breaking–the-fast. Your body needs fuel and energy shortly after waking. So many of us don’t make the time or habit of giving our body nutrition in the morning but it’s definitely necessary. Sticking to an eating schedule (same time) can really help as well as prepping your breakfast the night before so it’s easy peasy. One of my favorite things to start with is some fruit! Fruit is a perfect food to eat 1st… why? Because it is easy for your body to digest and you will utilize those sugars + hydration easily and immediately. Then moving on to a nutritious smoothie or meal sans refined sugars, refined carbs and processed foods. Think greens, protein + healthy fats for long-lasting satiation (you’ll feel full longer). I love eggs, avocado and kale or mixed greens on my morning plate. With my energy up and blood sugar balanced… I’m good to go!
#7 Movement. Get up and move! Shake your booty, jump around and stretchy stretch. Anything that starts to get your blood moving and your lungs filled up with oxygen. In just 5 minutes you can warm up your body and feel a whole lot fresher. My favorite mini morning workouts are… dancing to my favorite jams, jumping on my rebounder (mini trampoline), a 5-10 minute HIIT video or doing a few Yoga poses. Exercise is proven to be one of the best drug-free antidepressants, stress-reducers and will energize you right up. Don’t let time become an issue here, you can feel a multitude of benefits with very little time commitment. Think simple… fun… fresh!
#8 Cold Water. This is a major refresher and one of my fave “secret” beauty rituals. I’m not talking about drinking cold water… I’m talking energizing your senses with a few splashes or a full on downpour of some icy cool H2O from head to toe. This practice might sound like a “Hellll NO” scenario but the benefits have some pretty pay off for real. The cold water tightens the pores of your skin and stimulates both your circulatory and your lymphatic systems which helps to brighten your skin tone and can reduce cellulite. The temperature change pushes blood deeper into your body giving your organs a burst of fresh blood and helps to move out stagnant fluids which can cause yuckiness of all sorts. Another interesting benefit is that when you finish your shower with cold water you’ll actually feel warmer when exposed to the cool air as you stand there in your birthday suit. Splashing your face with cold water or turning that shower handle to the right has some major benefits inside and out, not to mention you’ll probably feel wide awake and ready to go. :)
#9 Reading. Taking in something inspiring sure puts me in a place of feeling more connected, purposeful and eager to take action with my own life. If you spend just 10 minutes a day reading, think of all the amazing things you’ll learn and discover. Plus it’ll help you get through more of the endless amounts of incredible literature that exists in our world! ;) I am a bit of a book addict so this one of my favorite rituals and honestly it’s hard to keep it to only 10 minutes a day… I seriously love to read!!! However, if reading doesn’t sound so appealing as a part of your morning rituals then audiobooks are another wonderful option to consider.
#10 Planning + Prioritizing. Ever heard the term Fail to Plan… Plan to Fail? Planning and checking in with your goals and intentions daily is a must to taking action. Where + how are you going to spend your precious energy? How can you tell what’s most important and when you need to take a step away from something to fill yourself back up? Planning + prioritizing those essential things that make you feel joy, motivated, rejuvenated, etc before giving your time + energy away to the plethora of external demands is one of my greatest takeaways from practicing to live a balanced life. What I mean is that you need to put all the things that fill YOU up into your calendar, schedule, routine, or rituals first and foremost before you invite external responsibilities + duties into your life. In my honest opinion starting with your morning rituals is one of the BEST ways to stay focused on what truly matters most in your life. Get it? Good. :)
